Constipation in pregnancy?!
Constipation. The most glamourous pregnancy symptom around… NOT!
If you’re suffering from this common preggo symptom, here’s what you might find useful to know:
How common is it (in other words will I get it)?!
Between 16 - 39% of preggos experience constipation at some point during pregnancy. So if you do find yourself a bit backed up during pregnancy, you’re not alone!
Why does it happen?
Just like most other things in pregnancy, hormones are most likely to blame! Rising levels of progesterone relaxes the bowel and intestines which can make it harder to poop!
Your growing baby’s extra weight placing pressure on your bowel can cause constipation.
Many prenatal vitamins contain additional iron or you may have been placed on an iron supplement in pregnancy. Iron is a prime culprit for constipation!
What can I do?
Eating enough fibre (ideally 25-30g per day minimum). So fruit, veg, beans and pulses are your friends!
Stay hydrated. 8 - 12 cups of water a day is recommended during pregnancy.
20 - 30 minutes of moderate exercise, 3 times a week will help kickstart your metabolism which will help to keep you regular.
If constipation is severe, it might be worth taking a trip to your GP who could prescribe you with a laxative.
Phew! It’s gone!
Remember that constipation can come and go during pregnancy and in the postpartum period too.
Try and get into a good habit of a balanced diet, good hydration and physical mobility now to help prevent the poop preventers!
