Can I use a pool if I’m being induced?
Over a third of the country is having their labour started via induction so if you were hoping for a water birth & now facing a decision regarding induction, this is gonna be a serious consideration for you.
The long & short of it is, you’ll likely be told that induced labours & water births don’t mix. If you don’t ask why, you may be told that popping your babe out in the tub is not an option for you.
Why though?
Excellent question!
It is likely going to come down to the other “things” that come with induction of labour e.g. continuous foetal monitoring that is usually recommended for an induction of labour & which actually doesn’t mix well with water!
Question everything
If anyone/anything is asking you to reconsider your preferences for birth, such as birthing in water. It’s always important to understand why recommendations are being made and whether that is enough of a reason for you to abandon your choices.
Conclusion
The bottom line is that YES, of course a water birth is a valid option even if you are being induced!
The Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services along with Emma Ashwroth (a Birth Rights activist), have written about this exact topic to help you navigate your options when accepting an induction of labour.
